Carpenter Level 1

You are a reliable, quality driven, problem solver with experience on job sites.

As a commercial construction carpenter you construct, erect, install and repair structures of wood, plywood, and wallboard to local building code.

You have the skills and perform work basic to most building construction.

You erect wood frame work in buildings, build forms for concrete and erect partitions, studs, joints, drywalls and rafters.

You install all types of floor coverings, ceilings, paneling, trim, and interior systems.

You use a broad range of hand and power tools, and you maintain your tools in safe and working order.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Other duties may be assigned.

  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Lay out floor plans, windows, doors and cabinetwork.
  • Select materials and structural units, such as lumber, prefabricated doors and cabinets of wood or plastic, and paneling, and inspects them to ensure conformance with provisions of building code and local ordinance.
  • Determine sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly and erection of structure.
  • Install doors, build stairs and lay hardwood floors.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product.
  • Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials.
  • Shape materials to prescribed measurements.
  • Build stairs and lay out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
  • Fit and install prefabricated window frame doors, metal doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim and finish hardware, such as locks, closures, crash bars, letter drops and kick plates.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Install finish trim, cabinets, counters and millwork
  • Lead small crew of carpenters and/or laborers to accomplish assigned tasks

Education and/or Experience  High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
Minimum 1- 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Language Skills  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.   Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Mathematical Skills   Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
